Mary-Kate and Ashley's The Row PDF Print E-mail

mkaolsen.jpgGossip magazines; they seem to be everywhere nowadays, and let's face it, love them or hate them, the temptation to sneak a peek to see what fabulous outfit, or hideous fashion faux pas our favourite celebrities have been spotted wearing is often too much to resist.

One of the latest celebrity trends seems to be the marketing of their own signature style, with everyone from Brits Kate Moss, Lily Allen and Sienna Miller, to Gwen Stefani and J Lo using their own fashionista style status to inspire and influence their own clothing lines. The latest to join this long list of celeb-designer hybrids are arguably two of the most influential entrepreneurial style icons yet: Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen.

The Olsen twins are possibly the most famous and successful of all former child stars (with perhaps the exception of The Jacksons), and have licensed their names to everything from television shows and straight-to-DVD and VHS releases, to Formica bedrooms and clothing for young girls. It seems that the success of their clothing range targeted at the 5-12 aged audience has allowed the girls to branch out with their design skills and produce a new and much more adult fashion line: The Row. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley are regular features in the aforementioned gossip magazines, however it is not their private lives that are the focus, but their clothes. These appearances on the glossy pages are not only proof of the pair’s passion for fashion, but are demonstrative of their unique sense of style. Their outfits defy expectations, and although the odd fashion mishap is sometimes evident, their experimentation and mix of high street, vintage and designer labels has gained them respect not only from their fans, but from the fashion industry.

This love of fashion is clearly reflected in their new clothing line, The Row. Mary-Kate has acknowledged her sister to be the brains behind the initial idea of the line, a concept that reportedly occurred during Ashley’s time studying at college. For any ordinary college student the prospect of dropping out of NYU in favor of starting their own fashion label would not be only daunting, but incredibly foolish, but Ashley Olsen is no ordinary college student. The twins have developed into sensible and intelligent business women over their years of work and merchandising, and therefore their experience and love of clothes meant that a fashion line was probably the next logical step in their careers.

So, what can we expect from The Row? Unlike many of the previous celebrity lines, the clothes are not only inspired by the style of their creators, but are also evocative of classic pieces from designers such as Balenciaga, Chanel and Calvin Klein. The clothing line features items that, although luxurious in their design, also serve to be practical in every day life. They are the kind of products that, if mix and matched correctly, could be worn during any season to any event. The only drawback with The Row is that the prices for the collection are a little steeper than some fans may be prepared to pay, but this is because the line, as previously mentioned, does indeed rival some catwalk labels, and this is therefore reflected in the pricing. Leggings are priced around $360, while a cashmere tuxedo jacket is likely to set you back $1700. Best start saving now girls!

The Olsen Twins are undoubtedly tredsetters when it comes to fashion and I like how they decided to use The Row instead of their name to try and sell this line. Time will tell...
