focuscoupe.jpgLaunched in 2000, the Ford Focus isn’t new to the scene, but the new 2009 Focus Coupe is worth a look. I’ve never been that impressed with the Focus because the design is so basic, but the new coupe is like the sedan’s edgy sibling.

The Focus Coupe is available in two trims: SE and SES. The base SE, which starts at $16,180, comes equipped with SIRIUS Satellite Radio. The upgraded SES, which starts at $17,570, comes equipped with both the SYNC Communication System and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Both come with a 5-speed manual transmission though automatic is available for a little extra. And, to take advantage of the SIRIUS Satellite Radio you’ll need a subscription.

What I Like

Sporty Look – I typically wouldn’t think of the Focus as being a sleek sporty car, but the 2-door Coupe is just that. You can get it in four different colors: Ebony, Brilliant Silver Metallic, Sangria Red Metallic, and my personal favorite… Vista Blue Metallic. The more expensive SES trim comes with 17” wheels which help give it the sporty look.

35 MPG – It may not be a hybrid but it gets nearly as good of gas mileage. You get up to 35 mpg on the highway and 24 in the city.

Compact, yet Spacious – The Focus Coupe is compact, but is spacious in all the right places. You’ll find plenty of legroom in the front and acceptable space in the back. The trunk is surprisingly spacious and if you need extra room you can even lay down the back seats.

Interior Features – From ambient lighting and the SYNC Communication System to the heated seats, you can get a lot of luxury if you so choose. The ambient lighting is a neat option on the SE trim and standard on the SES. The small colored lights help to see under the dash and the cupholders. It’s not only functional but also pretty cool looking. The SYNC Communication System is Ford’s solution to making it easy for you to make calls or use your iPod while you’re driving, and it works great! SYNC is available as an add-on for the SE trim and standard on the SES. Available as an add-on for the SES trim is leather heated seats. If you live in a cold weather state, like yours truly, you will absolutely LOVE this feature.

What I Don’t Like

I have no major complaints about the Focus Coupe. It drives quietly and smoothly, the exterior is pleasing to the eye, and the interior is well designed and spacious. The only issue I have, and this isn’t specific to the Focus nor Ford -- more so an industry-wide problem, is that the starting price is slightly high. I think the starting price would make sense in the $12,000-$15,000 range.

Overall

The 2009 Ford Focus Coupe is perfect if you’re looking for the following four S’s: small, spacious, sleek and sporty. If you’re looking to buy the Focus Coupe, I recommend buying the more expensive SES trim so that you get the full sport appearance.
