The Let It Rock Tour may be lacking a blockbuster name on the roster but attendees definitely got their money’s worth when the show rolled through Chicago at the House of Blues on April 8th. For less than $20, the crowd was treated to music from 6 artists that lasted over 4 hours long in a great intimate environment. Each artist played a showcase of songs lasting around 30 minutes. Surprisingly, headliner Kevin Rudolf didn’t perform any longer than the other acts, although that is understandable considering he has only released one studio album. There was something to be said about the crowd at House of Blues that night. The energy throughout the crowd was infectious from the start and it didn’t seem to die down as the night progressed. It was almost as if everyone was their just to listen to the music and not see one particular performer. Everyone got equal applauds as well.
Kicking off the evening was unsigned band Go Crash Audio from Nebraska. The 4 member band had a great time onstage and looked very comfortable while performing songs from their debut album With Wings & Radar. The pop rock bands sound is very authentic- not trying to fit a mold that is all too common with albums in this genre today.
Following Go Crash Audio was 5 member band Cash Cash. Their sound is very unique and is described by the band as “the sounds of groups like Daft Punk and Justice and mixing it with a little guitar, some elements of Michael Jackson and Madonna, and relay that vibe in songs that you can easily sing along to and have a good time dancing to.” That was exactly the mood of the crowd during their set where they played songs with catchy lyrics such as “There's a party in your bedroom all night long.” Fans throughout the crowd, joined along mouthing the lyrics as the band played songs on their first full length album Take it to the Floor and covers such as Cascada’s Everytime We Touch. This band shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon- their scheduled to play overseas after the Let It Rock tour and then come back to the States for the Warped Tour this summer.
Up next, we had Hyper Crush an electronica hip hop trio. They literally transformed the House of Blues into a club with their strobe and laser light show complete with the lead singer wearing brass knuckles outfitted with lasers on each finger. While fun, the music tended to sound a bit overproduced and vying for attention with lyrics literally screaming “sex and drugs.”
Following, Hyper Crush we have pop rock band The Audition from Chicago. Their fan base was appropriately large at this hometown show and people were eager to check out a preview of songs off their forthcoming third album scheduled for release in late April. Their sound was much mellower compared to the other acts utilizing a rhythm guitar in their set.
Jeremy Greene was a last minute addition to the lineup and is signed to MySpace Records. He sounds is a mix between hip hop and R&B. I quickly recognized him as Ali Lohan’s producer who made multiple appearances on her E Entertainment Television show Living Lohan.
Finishing off the night, was Kevin Rudolf most notably known for his chart topping song featuring Little Wayne, Let It Rock. I was a bit surprised with his performance, expecting his vocals to be featured more. It was quickly evident that he was more known for his guitar playing when he brought a hype man onstage for the entire set to engage the crowd and sing the lyrics with the occasion joining in by Kevin himself. His guitar playing though was impeccable though and even reminded me of Santana.
