This all began when Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina, where he found they had no shoes to protect their feet. This experience compelled him to help, so he created TOMS Shoes. TOMS Shoes is a company that matches every pair of shoes bought with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff with 10,000 pair of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.
The reason behind the shoes is something of importance. Most of the children developing in countries grow up barefoot. They are barefoot when at play, doing chores or just getting around. Their primary mode of transportation is walking. They can walk for miles to get food, water, shelter and medical help. Shoes enables them to walk longer distances that they would not be able to barefoot. Children can not attend school since shoes are a required part of their uniform. Since they do not have shoes, they do not go to school. Since they don’t receive an education, they do not have the opportunity to realize their potential.
