selmablair_copy.jpgSelma Blair Beitner, born on June 23rd, 1972, Southfield, Michigan, was certainly not bred for fame.  Parents Molly Ann and Elliot Beitner enrolled their four daughters (Selma the youngest) in a private Jewish school.  Selma later attended Cranbrook Kingswood, and then pursued photography at the Kalamazoo College with a minor in English. Transferring to the University of Michigan in 1992, Selma earned a degree that was composed of fine arts and English.

After many minor roles, and a continually climbing resume, Selma finally started making headway in Hollywood in the late 90s.  Selma auditioned for the role of Buffy on the hit television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997) but did not achieve the hoped for position.  Selma’s spark into the industry came when she landed a role in the movie “Cruel Intentions”(1999) alongside Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.  Another big break came while achieving a lead on the television series “Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane.”  She now more than just another name, she was gaining credibility as an actress.

After having been involved in these grand productions, more and more opportunities were being opened to Selma.  Selma contributed to acclaimed movies such as “Legally Blonde” (2001), “The Sweetest Thing” (2002), “A Guy Thing” (2003), “Hellboy” (2004), “In Good Company” (2004), and “The Fog” (2005).

Selma was dedicated to her work and was consequently recognized, being nominated for numerous awards.  This included being nominated, and winning, the Young Hollywood Award in 2000 and 2002 for the Young Hollywood Awards.  Selma was also nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 1999 and 2002, nominated for and won an MTV Move Award in 2000, and was nominated for a DVD Premiere Award in 2003.

Selma was involved in smaller productions in the last few years until recently produced “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” (2008).  Selma’s newest anticipation remains to be the upcoming television series, “Kath and Kim.”  “Kath and Kim” is the U.S. version of a hit Australian comedy about a mother and daughter’s relationship.  Selma will be working beside renowned comedian Molly Shannon.  The series is set to premiere Thursday, October 9th, and 8:30/7:30c. Furthermore, Selma has a new movie, “Driving Lessons,” coming out in 2009, working alongside Dermot Mulroney.  Needless to say, Selma has had a rich, full acting career;  her hard work, perseverance, and determination has helped her, in the end, achieve success.
