Twilight Saga: Eclipse Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chad Kennedy

eclipse.jpgWe all knew this day was coming, it’s been the moment you Twi-hards have been looking forward to since November 20th, 2009 after the credits began rolling on New Moon. It’s finally here, so what did we think about The Twilight Saga: Eclipse? If you haven’t seen the film yet and don’t want it to be spoiled, this is your warning to hit the back button as fast as you can.

The opening of Eclipse begins with the first victim in Seattle, Riley Biers. As any Twi-hard knows, Riley is just the first of many newborn vampires to come. Riley is the leader of the newborns who are being created to ultimately bring down the Cullen’s. Like every new Twilight movie, Eclipse has a new director at the helm and that is David Slade. Whether it was solely his touch as director or perhaps the increased budget, David certainly took Eclipse to new heights that neither Twilight nor New Moon achieved.

Sure, Eclipse offers some of the trademark Twilight cheesiness, there are plenty of shirtless Jacob scenes and sparkling Edward, but this time it comes off as less awkward and more charming. Transitions from scene-to-scene are no longer choppy as was the case in Twilight, now there are smooth transitions from one scene to the next with brilliant flashbacks mixed in to give us more of the backstory of the Cullen’s. Eclipse also brings us Edward proposing to Bella, which brought many “aww’s” from the audience, and a steamy almost-sex scene. Yes, they went there.

Eclipse brings a whole new level of action to the Twilight Saga as well. No, not that kind of action. Toward the beginning of the movie there is a chase scene where the vampires and the werewolves are both after Victoria as she leaps from one territory to the next. The other major action scene comes at the end as the Cullen’s team with the werewolves to defend against the army of newborns and Victoria. Even knowing what happens in the book, I was still on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen and how it was going to play out. As to be expected, the movie doesn’t follow the book exactly. There are things left out and other things added, which in my opinion only makes the movie more fun to watch because it’s not completely predictable. I did miss some things from the book not being in the movie, but I also felt the movie was perfect length at 2 hours and 4 minutes.

If you’re a Twi-hard it doesn’t really matter what I say because you’re going to see the movie regardless, if you’re not a twi-hard and just curious, I highly recommend you watch Eclipse (after Twilight and New Moon, of course). Eclipse is by far the best movie in The Twilight Saga, better than Twilight and New Moon combined. The movie is entertaining and engaging throughout the entire two hours. Kristen, Rob, and Taylor have upped their game when it comes to acting the parts. I, especially, give props to Kristen who seems to be getting more comfortable in her role. She has perfectly captured both the vulnerability and confidence of Bella Swan as her character has grown throughout the series. It will be interesting to see how she continues to evolve in Breaking Dawn as Bella and Edward get married and have a vamp baby.

Breaking Dawn will be split into two parts, the first part being released on November 18th, 2011. What will do with ourselves in the meantime?
