Sixteen: the significant age where an individual reaches his or her “coming of age”. It is an age where countless responsibilities are placed on an individual. At age 16, Avan Jogia has already felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. He has had his fair share of roles in movies, from Devil’s Diary to Gym Teacher: The Movie and is aware of the pressure of the media and culture involved with being an actor. Yet, despite all of this, Jogia insists that although “it can be hard to be a regular 16 year old”, he does not mind. Like a normal teenager, Jogia enjoys being with friends, listening to music, and playing guitar and piano. Yet, unlike any normal teenager, Jogia is a successful actor.
Jogia’s first notable role was in the 2006 Lifetime movie, A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story. Since then, he has played Sam in the TV series, Aliens in America. His recent film, Spectacular!, is a musical comedy about a high school girl who tries to save the school choir by having a teen rocker join. After the three High School Musicals and the chaotic hype that came afterwards, Spectacular! seems to be Nickelodeon’s shot at a remake. However, lyrics are catchy, the dances are fun, and the story is sweet. Jogia comments, “we worked hard to make it…It’s going to be great to see what kind of response we get.” And their hard work has surely paid off. Nickelodeon is already in the works for a spectacularly Spectacular! sequel. As for future goals, Jogia wants to challenge himself and hopes that “in 5-10 years, [he] is doing challenging roles in good films that are changing the way people think.” Jogia’s future goals and his past film roles demonstrate his versatility and determination in the acting world. This determination has led him to a new door and a new opportunity. He is already working on a new television show entitled Caprica, a prequel to the popular science fiction series, Battlestar Galactica. Jogia states, “The thing about being an actor is you never know what might happen…” and isn’t that the most exciting part? But the one thing I do know is that Jogia will be around for a long time in the entertainment industry. Additionally, when asked what he would do if he was not an actor, Jogia replied, “…I’d probably do something within the industry—writer, director, something like that. I will always be an artistic person…” No matter if he is an actor or a director, we can expect to see great things from Avan Jogia.
