The 90s. A time of girl power, raves, Seinfield, and Garbage, the alternative rock band, formed in 1994. Consisting of vocalist, Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Butch Vig, and Steve Marker, Garbage was highly successful in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. How did their popularity begin, and where is the group now?
In 1993, Manson, who was with the band, Angelfish, caught the attention of Marker. After Angelfish disbanded, Manson joined Erikson, Vig, and Marker under the group name, Garbage. In 1995, the group released their self-titled album, debuting at #12 in the United Kingdom. To promote the album, Garbage released multiple singles, with “Stupid Girl” receiving frequent airtime and peaking at #24 on the Hot 100.
Garbage’s success continued, receiving Grammy nominations for Best
New Artist and Best Rock Song. They released their second album in
1998, headlining their own tour in Europe. Selling 1.3 million copies,
Garbage’s third album, Beautiful Garbage, was called one of the top ten
albums of the year by critics in the US and Australia. The next album, however, encountered troubles during production. Manson required surgery on her vocal chord, halting the production of their fourth album. During this time, tension amongst members increased, and because of this, Vig moved to LA, while Manson moved back to Scotland. Garbage seemed to be in an indefinite hiatus, however, Vig encountered fans that were eager for their next album. The next year, Garbage met in LA, writing and performing new material. The 2005 single, “Why Do You Love Me”, became the most successful single for six years. Another from their album, “Bleed Like Me” reached the #10 spot in the United States. Garbage seemed to be achieving high success once again. However, in their last tour stop in Australia, Garbage announced they would take an indefinite hiatus, realizing that they had “somewhat overextended themselves.” Since 2005, Manson has worked on her solo album, with the help of Vig. Vig has produced for bands such as Jimmy Eat World and The Subways. In 2007, Garbage lifted their hiatus and released a remixed and reworked album, Absolute Garbage. In June of 2009, Vig announced Garbage intended to write a new song, also wanting to record a fifth studio album and tour. Garbage has had a long run, from their big beginnings in the 1990s, until their rough patches in 2003, and beyond. Hopefully, we will be seeing bigger things from Garbage in the near future.
