Sliimy Interview PDF Print E-mail
Written by Chris Heinz

sliimy.jpg20 year old Yanis Sahraoui is the name of yet another artist attempting to break into the cutthroat music scene here in the States from abroad. Don’t be too quick though to dismiss him as just another pop artist who had a successful run on MySpace looking to capitalize off his new fame. He refers to music as “something in you—it’s organic” and is quick to dismiss it as being something you choose to do.

This native from France, known artistically as Sliimy, caught the attention of Perez Hilton, known to have an eye for talent, and was the first artist signed to his new, Perezcious, record label. Sliimy recalls Perez posting his cover of Britney Spear’ Womanizer, calling it “huge and as a result lots of people heard about me. Six months later, we met in Los Angeles when he launched his music label.” He was also chosen by Perez to go on his “Perez Hilton Presents” tour this past fall. Perez wasn’t the only person to take interest in Sliimy. Both Britney Spears and Katy Perry invited him to open for them while touring in Europe and Dita Von Teese invited him to Fashion Week. He was praised online for his YouTube video by the likes of Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Paris Hilton, and Sarah Silverman.

Slimy describes his music as a “combination of a lot of influences. When I was 9 years old I started singing gospel. I fell in love with pop culture around the same time. The most important thing for me is that there are no limits in the Arts. Language is not a barrier, the mix of different sounds.” His music has gained comparisons to the likes of Mika, Prince, and Elton John. Musically he looks up to David Bowie, Prince, Madonna, and Grace Jones. His pop infused debut album Paint Your Face is currently in stores and features a few ballads as well. When asked about the inspiration for the album title, Sliimy responds, “You can’t trust appearances, it's the meaning of Paint Your Face, the colors can hide lots of secrets and sadness… It’s a little bit of the story of my life, as a teenager I was faced with that kind of behavior, some aggressive people were turned off by me, because they don’t try to understand more than what they see. People who really know me as a human being know I’m shy and full of dream.” These dreams he speaks of thus far have gained him quite the fan following and I’m sure overtime it will only get greater.
