The Dollyrots Interview PDF Print E-mail

dollyrots.jpgKelly Ogden, Luis Cabezas, and Chris Black collectively make up, The Dollyrots, a punk/hippie powerhouse group.

“Well Luis and I were in school and he told me he was starting a band. I had been playing guitar for a little while so I begged them to let me play rhythm guitar and sing backing vocals! Eventually I got better and our bass player/singer left so I jumped in his place. I had 2 weeks to re-learn the songs on bass and sing at the same time. I loved it…” Kelly explains how the group began.

As time progressed, Luis and Kelly began looking at their work as a career and a growing process finally deciding to take a unique leap with their lives. “…Eventually we got better, wrote more, made a recording and decided that music was what we wanted to do with our lives and off to LA we went. That move, from Florida, was the hardest and most awesome thing I've done in my life. We met Chris in LA and the rest is what you see...” said Kelly.

Once the group united at a whole, the Dollyrots began to watch their careers as, according to Kelly, 'punk-rock hippies' take off. However, one thing Kelly said the Dollyrots would never try to do is sacrifice themselves. “I'm just me. A little bolder or more in-charge or aggressive or even silly. Whoever I am on stage is just what I feel that night x10! For a while I questioned it a lot... I couldn't decide what to do. I'm not a showy person, I don't look for chances to be the center of attention or stand out. And I was afraid I wasn't exciting enough or crazy enough to front the band. What I learned was that I just needed to be myself and be confident. So far so good,” said Kelly.

As the only female in the group, Kelly does see at times the separation in behavior between herself and the boys, “we share food so I'm training them to never reach their hand in the bag. You know, pour out your portion. I don't want their dirty hands in my almonds! HAH. But really they're pretty easy guys. Not too messy, gassy or hairy. They know I like to carry my own stuff and I hate it when they tell me how to drive so all is well in our little family. Oh and we NEVER go to sleep mad. Seriously,” admits Kelly.

As this family works together in the world of “punk-rock hippies,” they do still individually have their own taste, even when it comes to music. “I listen to a lot of Irish music, I mean the old stuff! As well as the Pogues, Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly. And old jazz too. My uncle gave me 10 of his favorite albums; Louie Jordan, Eddie Condon, Jack Teagarden and more! Lets see... there's also some "hippie crap" i.e. folk music; Melanie, Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkle, Joni Mitchell...  and the best soundtrack ever, ‘The Dirty Dancing Soundtrack,’” said Kelly

As one of Blender.com’s Hottest Women of Rock, Kelly may be the considered a “beautiful rocker,” but this singer sees no need for the attention. “Well, I was flattered and still felt a little funny. I mean I do try to look good. I wash my hair every now and then, have learned to do my eye make-up and trade off my two pairs of pants! I guess I was just a little surprised,” said Kelly.

Although transitioning from an eight-grade garage band to one of the hottest up-and-coming groups of today is a huge change, the Dollyrots have done it with their own style, class, and that same love for music they started with.
