The Summer Set: who hasn’t heard of this new & upcoming band by now? Recently Teen Scene had a chance to chat with two of the bands members: Jess, the drummer and only female member and Brian, the vocalist who joined in 2007.
Three of The Summer Set's five members have been playing together for six or seven years. Jess, Stephen, and John went through several different band names and numerous name changes but in 2007 they officially became The Summer Set. When Brian replied to the groups Myspace bulletin, which told about their need of a new singer, everything just fell into place. With the four of them now together, the band was only missing one thing. "They found me then Josh shortly after and The Summer Set began!" said Brian The band has a wide variety of influences and very different tastes. For example, Jess cites Travis Barker, Sheila E, Karen Carpenter, and Brad Hargreaves, as some of her main influences. Brian seems to have a much wider range of influences including: Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and John Mayer. Although the group has a wide range of tastes and they occasionally argue while in the studio in the end everything works out. "We do fight because we all have a lot of different musical influences," said Brian, "But usually our differences blend together and gives us a better song in the end. Being part of a band can be difficult but being the only girl in a band with four guys has to be tough! But Jess doesn't seem to have a problem with it, "It's a lot of fun actually. There are definitely times when it sucks to be the only girl, but I couldn't even imagine touring in a band with four other girls. If the guys ever start annoying me all I have to do is put on my headphones and watch a movie or listen to music." When asked which band member Jess and Brian would want to trade places with if they could, they both had the same answer: John. "I would want to be John because I have always wanted to play guitar...and everyone pretty much loves him!" said Jess. Brian agreed saying, "I'm really curious to find out what it's like being him. It's like he lives on his own separate planet!" Over the past two years the group has shared a lot of great experiences. From races in Chicago to crashing wedding receptions in Vegas, the group always manages to have fun when they are together! Which makes them a fun group to follow!
