runforcause_copy.jpgAcross the globe people are coming together and combining exercise and fitness with diseases and causes in hopes to raise money for research and monetary assistance to those affected. Not only are these events an opportunity to be with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and get exercise but it is a fantastic way to raise money and awareness for certain diseases and charities. These runs and walks take place in large cities across the United States and Canada every year. Most recent walks have been the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Aids Run and Walk and CIBC’s Run for the Cure. American Cancer Society – Relay for Life
The American Cancer society runs an annual event across North America called Relay for Life. The event began in the United States in May of 1985. Dr. Gordon Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Washington was looking for a way to help raise funds for Cancer research. For 24 straight hours he walked and jogged around the track at Baker Stadium. People joined him, paying $25 or $30 to partake in a few hours of walking. At the end he had walked approximately 83 miles and raised $27,000. It is estimated that Relay For Life events have raised over 3 billion dollars to date.

Aids Foundation of Chicago Run and Walk
A few months ago on June 6, 2009, the world marked the 28th anniversary of the discovery of AIDS. Even though many medical advancement have been found, AIDS is still a chronic disease that does not have a vaccine or a cure. The Center for Disease Control estimates that each year nearly 60,000 Americans will become infected with HIV, mainly young minority communities and young gay males.  Since its establishment in 2001, AIDS Run and Walk Chicago has raised more than $2 million to fight HIV/AIDS. (Chicago’s Aids Run/Walk took place on Saturday October 3rd 2009 at Grant Park).

CIBC – Run for the Cure
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest single day event for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs.

Each year, thousands of Canadians unite to participate in the Run. The Run was created in 1992 by a small group of volunteers who wanted to raise awareness and funds for the cause. The first event took place in Toronto and over 1,500 participants raised $85,000.

In 2008, 55 communities and 170,000 Canadians participated in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Together, they raised $28.5 million for breast cancer research, education, and awareness programs. (I personally took part in the CIBC Run for the Cure in Burlington, Ontario, Canada on Saturday October 4th 2009 – my team raised a totally of $1020).

As the colder months approach, many charities have taken a break from running and walking events. Be sure to check often on your local events which runs are happening in your town in 2010.
