Mark Waters, the director of Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, brings to the screen a romantic comedy, Just Like Heaven starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo. Reese plays Elizabeth, a workaholic doctor who is hit by a car on her way to a blind date. She wakes up to find a stranger, David, played by Mark Ruffalo, living in her apartment. Despite being able to walk through walls, Elizabeth doesn't believe she is a ghost. She can't remember who she is until the memories begin to slowly trickle back. David is her only source of communication because, for some reason, he is the only one who can see her.
Jon Heder, who played Napoleon Dynamite, has a minimal role in this film. He doesn't stretch far from his prior character Napoleon, but gives comic relief when needed. This film is Reese's first comedic role since the unforgettable Legally Blonde 2. She plays her part fairly well, but at times comes off slightly annoying. Mark Ruffalo holds his own against one of the top actresses in Hollywood. His ability to show off his sensitive, comedic and serious side shows his tremendous range as an actor. Throughout the film his likable personality shines.
While Just Like Heaven has some laugh out loud moments, it's a film that needs more originality in order to stand out from other romantic comedies. If you're a fan of Reese or Mark, then check out the film. You'll enjoy it enough to watch once. All in all, Just Like Heaven could have used a little more from up above to make this romantic comedy heaven sent.
Just Like Heaven is playing in theaters everywhere!
