Admit it, you either have a MySpace, Facebook or Friendster account and more than likely are addicted to one of these three networks. Well, Meetro will soon be a new addiction to your list. There are countless instant messengers out there ranging from AIM to Yahoo, MSN to ICQ, so what is so special about Meetro? This new instant messenger combines the social aspects of MySpace, Facebook, etc. with new technology allowing for local networking. This new feature – local networking – makes it easy to get to know people on your block, across town or around-the-world with just a click.

Meetro, the name is a combination of “meet” and “introduction,” gives you the opportunity to get to know everyone in your area. “If you're looking to meet new people around you, there really is no substitute,” says co-founder Wendell Davis III, 24. “Meetro will be compatible with all of those networks (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ) -- so you can bring your buddies from each network into Meetro, and they don't have to change software.” Currently, Meetro offers support for AIM, ICQ and will soon be announcing support for Yahoo messenger users. Support for cell phones and other mobile devices is also in the works.

Meetro originally launched on June 1st, but just recently released an improved beta version of the messenger. Meetro has already garnered the attention of Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. There have also been rumors swirling that Google will reportedly be buying the messenger and launching their own “Google IM” later this year. At this time, Meetro's co-founder Paul Bragiel, 27, can't confirm nor deny the reports.

I have been using Meetro since its initial launch and as I expect so many of you, I have become an addict. Everyday I log-on to Meetro and find people that are within just miles of me and others that are across the Atlantic.
