nevecampbell.jpgNeve Campbell is best known for her portrayal of Julia Salinger on Party of Five. Yet the pint-sized Canadian did not always dream of being a television star. She started out as a ballerina, dancing since age six and training at the prestigious National Ballet School of Canada since age nine.

Campbell was born on October 3, 1973 in Ontario, Canada. She received a full scholarship to the National Ballet School at age nine, but her dancing career was cut short at the young age of fourteen due to injuries and a supposed nervous breakdown. Shortly afterwards, Campbell began modeling, but quit that after about two months, finding it “shallow.” Although her hopes of becoming a professional dancer were finished, Campbell played a ballerina in the Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera at the young age of sixteen.

Campbell’s leap to television started on the Canadian show, “Catwalk” in 1992. Guest appearances on such cult classics as Kids in the Hall in 1992 and Are You Afraid of the Dark in 1994 soon followed. Of course it wasn’t until Party of Five, in 1994, that Campbell really hit it big. The show was about five siblings left alone after the death of their parents. She played Julia, the middle child in the Salinger household. The show had a rough start, but due to tremendous fan support, it ended up staying on the air until 2000.

During the run of Party of Five, Campbell found time to begin her film career. She co-starred in The Craft, about four teenagers who form a coven of witches. In the same year she starred in the widely successful, Scream, as Sidney Prescott, and has the distinction of playing one of the few characters who manages to live long enough to be in the second and third sequel.

One of her more controversial films is Wild Things, which was released in 1998. In it, Campbell plays Suzie Toller, a girl from the wrong side of the trailer tracks, who accuses her guidance counselor of rape. In 2003, the former ballerina released The Company, an inside look at a ballet company. The film was a labor of love for Campbell, as she co-wrote, starred in, and produced it.

In terms of personal life, Campbell has been married once, to Jeff Colt, who she met while she was in Phantom and he was bartending at the theatre. She moved in with him when she was only seventeen. They married in 1995, and divorced in 1997. Since then she has been linked to actors such as John Cusack, Matthew Lillard, and Matthew Perry.

Neve Campbell’s time is also spent raising awareness for Tourette Syndrome, a condition which her younger brother was diagnosed with in 1989. She has quite a few movies in the works, to be released later this year and in 2006, but for now you can catch her on Party of Five re-runs, or pick up the first season on DVD.
