Teen Scene talks to Joe Manganeillo who you may recognize as Owen from The CW's One Tree Hill. We chat with Owen about working with the cast of One Tree Hill, where the show is going now that Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton are leaving, and much more!
Given that Joe is not a teenager, in fact he's 32 years old now, we asked whether he was at all nervous about joining a teen soap opera, he stated, “I was nervous at first because I didn't know that the show was jumping ahead four years into the future. I read the script and thought, what are all these teenagers doing in my bar drinking underage and what is one of them doing naked in the back seat of my car.” One Tree Hill jumped ahead four years in their fifth season to avoid the awkward college years and instead focus on the characters post-college.
As for joining a show that was already four seasons deep, Joe says the cast welcomed him with open arms. “Soph [Sophia Bush] and James [James Lafferty] were really cool to me right away and that season there was the whole new cast who joined the old cast so there were people like Michaela and Robbie for me to hang out with as well.”
Season seven is going to add a new dynamic to the show as the lead actors Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton, who play Lucas and Peyton, are leaving the show. We were hoping to get an inside scoop from Joe, but he said, “I wouldn't want to ruin the surprises.” He goes on to say that One Tree Hill has been his favorite show to be apart of. “OTH has been a blast for me. I love working with everyone like Mark, Joe, and Greg. I loved playing Owen right up until he went uncharacteristically haywire last season but hopefully there will be more miles in his shoes left to travel. It would be interesting to see where the writers would go with him from here and if he could redeem himself somehow."
For those of you who hope to become an actor or actress, Joe says, “you gotta love it. This job will test you in ways you didn't know existed. One of my teachers in college used to say "acting is a means", To me that means it's a way of life, A way of exploration. You do it because you have to. I tried to do other things and I realized I couldn't. I'm married to this thing whether I like it or not. It's a part of me that I can't ignore. If you love it go for it and don't look back."
The final question and one that we enjoy stumping everyone with is, if you were a fly whose wall would you land on? Joe surprised us with a funny story. “I wish I could be a fly on my wall, 10 years ago. I'd want to go back and watch the tape of the night of my brother's high school graduation. We took my mother's old Buick Regal Limited out bar hopping all night and later realized we had somehow managed to lose two of the hubcaps. We drove around for hours looking for them but to no avail. The next morning we woke up and went outside and all four hubcaps were on her car. It was bizarre. I have no idea to this day what that was all about. So the first thing I would do is be a fly on the wall of that car so I could solve the mystery.”
If you haven’t already seen One Tree Hill and you are now in love with this guy as much as we are, tune in for One Tree Hill this fall on The CW.
